Foal Watch The Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center offers a wide range of routine and specialized veterinary services for all ages and breeds of horses. Our world-renowned equine healthcare experts specialize in both elective and emergency diagnosis and treatment. Appointments for non-emergency care may be scheduled by calling 703-771-6800. Emergency Care

Quality care and rapid response time often mean the difference between life and death for the sick or injured horse. The Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center has fulfilled a critical need in the region serving as the only 24 hour-a-day, seven-day-a-week, equine emergency facility. Expertise in emergency care is available for conditions requiring both medical and surgical treatments. Lameness & Surgery

Equine Surgery Lameness evaluation and surgical services are provided by faculty who are board certified in veterinary surgery by the American College of Veterinary Surgeons. Routine and specialized surgical procedures are offered and include treatment for orthopedic, abdominal, respiratory, urogenital, eye, and nervous system disorders, as well as infectious diseases. Specialized surgery includes fracture repair, arthroscopic, and laparoscopic procedures, and surgery using lasers, ultrasound and endoscopy are available. Treadmill testing for gait analysis, performance analysis and detection of upper airway disease is available for all types of horses.

Internal Medicine

Internal medicine services are provided by faculty who are board certified in internal medicine by the American College of Veterinary Internal Medicine. Specialists offer expertise in gastroenterology, neurology, respiratory disease, cardiology, urology, endocrinology, neonatology, dermatology and critical care medicine. Specialized diagnostic capabilities include video endoscopy, cardiac monitoring, ultrasonography, pulmonary function testing, scintigraphy, and neurologic evaluation, including electroencephalography.

Patient Surgery CareAnesthesia

Anesthesia service is provided for medical and surgical patients. Patients are cared for by the anesthesiologist and skilled anesthesia technicians, using state-of-the-art gas anesthesia and monitoring equipment.


UltrasoundThe Equine Medical Center has specialized equipment for multiple imaging capabilities including digital radiology, computed radiography, magnetic resonance imaging, ultrasonography, video endoscopy, nuclear scintigraphy and high-speed digital video.


A full spectrum of clinical laboratory services is available to the Equine Medical Center’s patients, including complete analysis of blood and bodily fluids, microbiologic analysis, and pathology services. Laboratory services are available to practicing veterinarians by calling 703-771-6800.

To order a fecal egg count (essential for parasite management and monitoring) on a specimen from your horse, download and complete the Fecal Egg Count Request Form and include it with the sample to be tested. Bulk discounts on fecal testing (using the McMaster quantitative test) are available. Samples may be submitted in person, by mail, or via UPS delivery. Take advantage of the EMC clinical laboratory to help manage your horse’s health.


Farrier Service - Treadmill Farrier services for corrective shoeing are available by appointment on Wednesday and Friday of each week. Farrier service provides collaboration for foot balance using the treadmill and high speed videography for gait analysis.


The Equine Medical Center’s nurses and nursing assistants administer both elective and critical patient care 24 hours-a-day, seven days a week. Nurses receive extensive training in treating and monitoring a variety of equine health problems. Their work is directed by the primary clinician managing each horse’s care.
