The ICU/Colic Team at Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine, a volunteer based program, was implemented in the Spring of 2007 by students eager to gain more hands-on experience in the hospital prior to beginning their 4th year rotations. In order to offer more flexibility to the students to participate as much or as little as they can, the ICU/Colic Team allows students to choose which nights they would like to be on call each month based upon their individual schedules. Most teams are comprised of four to five 1st, 2nd, and 3rd year students, and are headed up by a team leader who coordinates student arrivals and acts as a liaison between staff and students during the emergency. Team leaders, also volunteers, are assigned based upon equine experience and technical training. Teams are on-call between the hours of 5pm and 8am, coming in to observe and participate in emergencies in the Large Animal Hospital when notified by the clinicians or hospital staff.
A special thank you to Dr. Celeste Blumerich, our ICU/Colic Team advisor here at VA-MD Vet Med!
Emergencies include but are not limited to:
- Sick Foals
Although the ICU/Colic Team primarily deals with equine emergencies, student members may be called in for emergencies relating to other large animal species presented to the Large Animal Hospital.
Things to keep in mind as a member:
When students are called in, they will be allowed to watch the entire workup process. After a few visits, students may be allowed to participate in the workup, if and only if they are ASKED to do so. Keep in mind that the first priority goes to those fourth year students currently in their large animal rotation. PLEASE only do what you are asked to do, and what you feel comfortable doing!
In the event that there is a foal that needs to be watched, students will each take a 1-2 hour shift to sit with the foal during the 5pm-8am time frames. It is the responsibility of the assigned Team Leader to coordinate the evenings shifts. Again, volunteer students may only help the 4th year students and nursing staff if asked to do so, and may only medicate or treat a foal if a 4th year student, doctor, or nurse is present!
If you have any questions, concerns, or comments regarding the teams please contact Erika Beck, ICU/Colic Team Coordinator.
Thanks for your interest in the teams!
