Celebrating 25 Years of Service
The Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center marks its 25th anniversary on October 14, 2009.
This full-service
equine medical center has become, over the years, a world-class clinical and research facility with:
- internationally renowned faculty veterinarians
- state-of-the art biomedical equipment
- competent, caring, and compassionate staff, and
- remarkable achievements in research and scholarship that have led to new knowledge for treatment of horses around the world.
In celebration of this special anniversary, several events are being held throughout the year to highlight our past accomplishments and to look forward to the future with continued dedication and commitment.
These events include:
The Dedication of the Paul R. Fout Barn - April 17, 2009
On a
perfect spring evening, the new “open air” barn on the campus of Virginia Tech’s Marion duPont
Scott Equine Medical Center was dedicated to Paul R. Fout, a renowned horse breeder and trainer who
passed away in 2005. The event began at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, April 17, as more than 160 guests arrived to
gather their programs and take their seats in a park-like area in front of the new barn.

The 25th Anniversary Reception – October 14, 2009
On the actual date of its 25th anniversary, the Equine Medical Center hosted a special event, featuring a number of honored speakers, facility tours, a treadmill demonstration, and a festive reception.
The silver anniversary of the EMC was used to not only look back on the many important accomplishments of its faculty and staff, but also to outline how the Center is working to improve the quality of equine medical care for the future while advancing equine health care through research and teaching.
Addressing the guests were Dr. Charles W. Steger, President of Virginia Tech; Dr. Gerhardt Schurig, Dean of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine; Dr. Nat White, Jean Ellen Shehan Professor and Director of the EMC; Dr. Jennifer Barrett, Ph.D. and Assistant Professor of Surgery at the Center, who also runs the molecular research laboratory on the Center’s campus; and Shelley Duke, a member of Virginia Tech’s Board of Visitors and chairperson of the EMC Council.
Special guests included State Senator Mark Herring, Delegate Joe May, other members of Virginia Tech’s Board of Visitors, EMC Council members, and Dr. Jack Howard, a Leesburg veterinarian who supported the Center from its earliest days.
The absence of two very important individuals was also noted. Jean Ellen duPont Shehan, Mrs. Marion duPont Scott’s niece and a tireless supporter of the EMC, was unable to attend the event, and Dr. Fred Fregin, the EMC’s founding director, was also missed. The dedication and commitment of each was gratefully acknowledged.
