Academic Visitors

The Marion duPont Scott Equine Medical Center does not require a fee to visit as an observer or to participate in an educational clerkship, however all expenses related to housing, board, transportation, and required insurance coverage are the visitor’s responsibility, as well as expenses related to rabies immunization and visa. All applications to visit the Equine Medical Center are reviewed on a first come, first served basis and are approved only when openings are available in faculty teaching and clinical schedules.

Observer

Students and veterinarians from other institutions, both domestic and abroad, are invited to visit the Equine Medical Center to observe practice for a week or more and attend available seminars and lectures. Visiting observers are not directly involved with hands-on care of patients and no special insurance or visa is required. Observers may elect to devote their time to a particular service or request time with specific faculty according to their area of interest, and are invited to exchange information in discussion of cases and lecture or seminar topics with faculty and students. Without proof of rabies vaccination and rabies titer >1:5 dated within 2 years of the visit access to certain areas of the hospital will be restricted.

Participant

Visiting students and veterinarians who engage in hands-on responsibilities for patient care must meet Virginia Tech requirements for visa, insurance coverage, and rabies immunization.

  1. Visiting students may take the three- or six-week clerkship that the senior veterinary students of the Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine elect. A written evaluation will be provided at the end of the practicum if required. Refer to the Fourth Year Veterinary Student Standards for further information regarding the senior student clerkship.
  2. Visiting veterinarians may request to work on a particular service or with specific faculty to develop skills in the diagnosis and treatment of equine medical and surgical disorders according to their area(s) of special interest.
