DVM Admissions: Selection Process

Stages of Evaluation for Admission Selection

Stage 1: Verification of Application

  • Verification that all required documentation has been received by the required deadlines, including, but not limited to, coursework, supplemental application, application fee and transcripts.
  • Verification that at least 60 semester or 90 quarter undergraduate credit hours have been successfully completed at the time of application.

Stage 2: Initial Ranking

  • 60% of initial ranking is based on academic performance:
    • Cumulative GPA
    • Required science GPA
    • Last 45-hour GPA
  • 40% of initial ranking is based on non-academic performance:
    • Veterinary experience
    • Animal experience
    • Research experience
    • Work experience
    • Community service experience

Stage 3: Holistic review of entire application by Admissions Committee Member

  • VMCAS essays
  • Supplemental essays
  • Explanation statement on VMCAS
  • Letters of recommendation

Stage 4: Final rankings of individual applicant pools

Final rankings of Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia and at-large pools.

Stage 5: Invitation to interview based on final ranking

  • All interviewee scores are set to zero.
  • Interview format: In-Person Multiple Mini-Interviews (MMIs)
    • A series of timed scenarios designed to assess attributes such as communication skills, ethical and moral judgment, management of team and self, problem solving and critical thinking abilities, creativity, resiliency and cultural bias
  • Admission offers are based on interview results.
