DVM Admissions: Evaluation Criteria

Phases of Evaluation for Admission Selection

Phase 1: Verification of Application

  • Verification that all required documentation has been received by the required deadlines, including, but not limited to, coursework, supplemental application, application fee, and transcripts.
  • Verification that at least 60 semester or 90 quarter undergraduate credit hours have been successfully completed at the time of application.

Phase 2: Pre-Interview Ranking

A holistic approach is used to evaluate applicants to identify individuals who are the best fit for our program and who contribute to multiple aspects of diversity. Evidence of academic abilities to succeed in the rigorous DVM program is required. There are no minimum requirements for particular experiences, but we seek individuals with a good understanding of the veterinary profession and broad experiences.

The following criteria are considered in evaluation of applicants:

  • Academic Performance – 55%
    • Cumulative GPA
    • Prerequisite Science GPA
    • Last 45-hour GPA
  • Non-Academic Activities – 45% (including the following):
    • 20% Experience/LOR/Essays
      • Veterinary experience
      • Animal experience
      • Research experience
      • Work experience
    • 25% CASPer™ Test Results
      • The CASPer™ Test is a Computer-Based Assessment for Sampling Personal Characteristics. All applicants to the DVM program at the Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine are required to complete an online assessment (CASPerâ„¢) to assist with our selection process for the 2020-21 application cycle. Successful completion of CASPer™ is mandatory in order to maintain admission eligibility.
      • CASPer™ is an online test that assesses attributes and interpersonal characteristics that we believe are important for successful students in and graduates of our program, and will complement the other tools we use for applicant screening. By implementing CASPer™, we are seeking to further enhance fairness and objectivity in our selection process. All applications are reviewed holistically, and the information provided by CASPer™ will be of additional benefit to the VMCVM Admissions Committee reviewing your application.

Phase 3: Final ranking of individual

Final rankings of Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, and at-large pools.

Phase 4: Invitation to interview based on final ranking

  • All interviewee scores are set to zero.
  • Interview format: In-Person Multiple Mini-Interviews (MMIs)
    • A series of timed scenarios designed to assess attributes such as communication skills, ethical and moral judgment, management of team and self, problem-solving and critical-thinking abilities, creativity, resiliency, and cultural bias
  • Admission offers are based on interview results.

Important information for Phase 4 of the selection process for the 2020-2021 application cycle

Unfortunately, we find it necessary to cancel all in-person interviews for this cycle as we are committed to the safety of our applicants and the college community. This is a provisional decision with the goal of resuming in-person interviews for the 2021-2022 admissions cycle. These decisions are, of course, dependent on COVID-19.
