Graduate Studies Opportunity in NSF IGERT Program

NSF IGERT Program Overview

We are pleased to announce a new National Science Foundation (NSF) funded Integrated Graduate Education and Research Training (IGERT) program at Virginia Tech in "Macromolecular Interfaces with Life Sciences (MILES): Oxidative Processes."

Fifteen interdisciplinary research faculty in four colleges at Virginia Tech will work with doctoral students and participate in an integrated interdisciplinary education program, multidisciplinary team research projects, coupled with unique outreach programs with the Science Museum of Western Virginia, a Collaborative Laboratory with a historically black college, and domestic and international industry internships.

The research efforts will include basic, applied and translational research in four areas:

  1. Fundamental investigations of oxygen-centered free radical mechanisms;
  2. Oxidation in bio-derived monomers and macromolecular synthesis;
  3. Oxidation control mechanisms in complex matrices; and
  4. Oxidation processes in human and animal aging and disease.

The Virginia-Maryland Regional College of Veterinary Medicine, one of the participating colleges, is recruiting permanent or national United States residents with a D.V.M. and/or MS degree(s) that are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. degree. The successful individuals will conduct research in area 4 of the MILES-IGERT, oxidative processes in human and animal aging and disease.

Key Program Features

Key features of this program for the student will include:

  • Competitive graduate stipends with at least 21 months at $30,000 per year and other months of support at nationally competitive levels, full tuition and fee waivers, funds towards a computer purchase, full travel support for travel, internships, and international experiences.
  • The opportunity to earn a Ph.D. degree in Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences and a MILES-IGERT Certificate.
  • Participate in a unique educational framework and collaborative interdisciplinary research program, using oxidative processes as the thematic basis for scientific connectivity that bridges the gap between traditional macromolecular science and evolving biological disciplines.
  • Participate in a leadership development program that involves development and presentation of an electronic portfolio, students teaching students, academic and industrial seminars, industrial internships, and international experiences.
  • Participate with an Industry Advisory Board in the development of entrepreneurial research initiatives.

  • The Graduate Record Exam (GRE) is required for admissions. You must have official GRE scores sent to the Virginia Tech Graduate School before steps to acceptance can be initiated. You may email your GRE scores to our office at in advance, but the official documents must still arrive to verify these scores and to initiate action on your application
  • Applicant must provide documentation of permanent or national U.S. resident status. Only U.S. permanent of national residents will be considered for this fellowship program.
